Burlington, Washington, grew up in the Ballard area of Seattle and was a class of '66 Ballard High school graduate. He studied Editorial Journalism at the UW and worked for the Seattle Public Library as well as the Seattle Times, where he worked as an assistant for the "Trouble Shooter" column. Phil was an accomplished musician and music lover. He played over 7 instruments and was well known and appreciated in his community for the music and entertainment he played and shared. He was an inductee of the PNW Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, an honor he greatly esteemed, and a hobby he enjoyed and promoted. Many appreciated his intellectualism, his wonderfully wry sense of humor, the old-time tunes he played so well, and his shuffleboard prowess.
